Best Buy Canada announces plans to launch Best Buy Mobile

Best Buy Canada, the fastest growing retailer and etailer of consumer electronics in Canada, is addressing the growing demand for a better mobile phone shopping experience. The Burnaby-based company today announced that it will be launching a unique stand-alone shopping experience with new stores located in shopping centers across the country. The new Best Buy Mobile stores will sell mobile phones, plans, accessories and related items – a unique format for Best Buy. The first stores will be constructed in the Greater Toronto Area and are slated to open before the 2008 Holiday season.

Best Buy Mobile will be managed from the company’s headquarters in Burnaby, British Columbia. The new store concept will harness the iconic power of the Best Buy brand that Canadians have grown to trust and will:

Best Buy Mobile expansion plans also include upgrading the mobile sections of select Best Buy stores across Canada for the Best Buy Mobile “store-within-a-store” concept. This new section within Best Buy’s current retail stores will offer more selection; have dedicated team members, and a no pressure, non-commissioned sales environment.

“Very few Canadians say they have had a positive experience while purchasing their mobile phones. Best Buy Canada believes this needs to change,” says Mike Pratt, President, Best Buy Canada Ltd. “Customers deserve a pressure-free, personalized one-stop-shop that puts the emphasis on them, not on the network or service plan. The creation of this new and innovative arm of our business is a direct response to the needs and feedback of our customers from coast-to-coast.”

“The mobile phone business in Canada is significantly underdeveloped,” says Phil Johnston, Director, Wireless Solutions, Best Buy Canada Ltd. “Best Buy believes there is a genuine need for a new solution in the wireless space and that we have the retail experience and expertise to deliver a new and unique choice to Canadian mobile customers.”

Best Buy Mobile standalone stores will average approximately 1,800 square feet, while the store-within-a-store concept will be located near the current wireless section and feature approximately 800 square feet of display space.
