After a successful three month test pilot in Calgary stores, Future Shop is expanding its used gaming offering across the country. Future Shop, Canada’s largest retailer and e-tailer of consumer electronics, announced today the national used gaming program is now available in 55 stores across the country and plans to offer the program in most stores in 2009. Unlike other used gaming retailers, Future Shop’s customers can trade-in used video games for a Future Shop gift card, allowing customers to turn their used games into the coolest, newest technology.

“Since launching the used gaming pilot program in Calgary in the spring, word spread quickly and our customers from coast to coast were asking when they would have the trade-in at their Future Shop stores,” said Michelle Grawe, Director Merchandising, Future Shop. “While the traditional male gamer continues to be the most common, we’re seeing more females, including Moms, trading-in used games, proving that gaming is becoming more and more a part of pop-culture and transcending all demographics.”

According to The NPD Group, a company that specializes in consumer and market research, the total video gaming market sales in Canada is $1.8B and has grown 54 per cent over the period July 2007 to July 2008.

Trade old games for new stuff

Future Shop accepts used games for these gaming consoles: XBOX 360, PlayStation 3, PlayStation Portable, Nintendo Wii and Nintendo DS. Games must be in good, re-playable condition and with the original case. The trade-in value of used games will be determined by Future Shop’s Trade-in Station. Pricing is determined based on inventory of the gaming titles and customer demand. All used games will be tested, cleaned and re-packaged in like new condition for customers. They will also be backed by a 30-day guarantee.

“When gamers finish that last level and want a new challenge they can trade up for another game or a new technology like an iPod nano at Future Shop now with our used gaming trade-in program,” said Grawe.
